About this event
Opera Saratoga’s 64th Summer Festival runs from May 20 – June 29. Full calendar below.
La Vie Parisienne (UPH, June 20, 22, 26, & 28)
Set in Paris in the 1860s, La Vie Parisienne is a French comic operetta originally composed by Jacques Offenbach. The (at times) bawdy, buddy comedy follows two bachelors who disguise themselves as tour guides for a Swedish Baron and Baroness, trying to woo the Baroness through a series of fictitious set-ups.
Songs will be performed in French (with English subtitles), dialogue will be in English.
She Loves Me (UPH, June 21, 25, 27, 28, & 29)
She Loves Me takes place in Budapest in the 1960s, where two sworn enemies work alongside each other at a parfumerie. Each has been writing love letters to an anonymous pen pal; little do they know, they’re writing to each other.
The musical by Jerry Bock, Sheldon Harnick, and Joe Masteroff is known for its tunes such as “She Loves Me,” “It’s Been Grand Knowing You,” and "Vanilla Ice Cream.” (Yes, Stewart’s Shops will be serving ice cream at intermission.)
A Mass for Women in Bathrooms (UPH, June 22 & 27)
A Mass for Women in Bathrooms is a work-in-progress performance from award-winning Irish composer Emma O’Halloran and librettist Naomi Louisa O’Connell. Centered around three sisters and their mother, it tells an intimate family story through the lens of Catholic Mass, examining themes of infertility, reproductive rights, and bodily autonomy.
In a Grove (Ferndell Pavilion, Spa Park, May 28 & 29)
A site-specific installation of the electronic opera In a Grove composed by Chris Cerrone with libretto by Stephanie Fleischmann will be held at the Ferndell Pavilion in Spa State Park. This operatic adaptation of Akutagawa’s classic short story “In a Grove” which inspired the plot of Kurosawa’s renowned film Rashomon, offers a searing investigation into the impossibility and elusiveness of truth.
Songs from the Great American Songbook (Mansion of Saratoga, June 1) and Festival Artist Portrait Concerts (Saratoga Winery, June 4 & 11)
There will be several opportunities to catch Opera Saratoga’s Festival Artists in concert. The Great American Songbook concert at the Mansion of Saratoga will focus on songs of travel, while the Festival Artist Portrait Concerts held at the Saratoga Winery will allow each artist to show off their own unique style and favorite repertoire.
